Did the suspect or defendant really write the note? A linguistic comparison of a document of known authorship with one of unknown authorship can determine if they might have been written by the same person.

Author attribution involves both content analysis and stylistic analysis. Do the known and questioned documents use similar vocabularies? Is the language used in similar ways?
